The Board of County Commissioners approved a FY27 performance incentive grant award from the Governor's Office of Crime Control & Prevention to support the jail‑based medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) program at the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center.
A sheriff's office representative told the board the original request was $259,189 to continue two contracted registered nurses; the actual award is $168,558, which will partially fund those positions. "The grant application requested $259,189 to cover the continuation of 2 registered nurses," the presenter said, adding the sheriff's office will seek other grants to cover the remainder. The board approved a budget amendment to reduce the project budget to match the award and authorized the commissioner president and sheriff to execute related documents.
County staff said there is no local match required for this grant. Commissioners asked about the program's history and future funding: staff said the jail MOUD program began operations in September 2020 after state law and funding opportunities emerged. Officials said if additional grant funds are not secured, the cost would need to be absorbed in the regular operating budget and realigned within the sheriff's office. The motion to accept the award and authorize submission and signatures passed by voice vote.
