University architect wins approval for small bronze donor plaque on Sibley Hall

Margaret Carney, who identified herself as university architect, presented a proposal to install a one-foot by four-inch bronze plaque on the interior face of Sibley Hall’s east portico to acknowledge donors who funded the portico reconstruction. She said the stone will be cleaned before mounting and described a minimally invasive attachment using two bronze pins that would allow future removal without impairing the building.
Commissioners reviewed the portico context and the plaque’s small scale. Staff reviewed standards and found the plaque would not remove distinctive materials or substantially alter the property’s character; no public comments were submitted. The ILPC voted to approve the certificate of appropriateness for the plaque placement and size. “The plaque will be smaller, but it will be set within that specific panel,” Carney said during the presentation.
