Gladstone board approves Nick Shannon Park playground Option A, with colors to be finalized

The Gladstone Parks & Recreation Board voted to move forward with Option A for the Nick Shannon Park play structure, approving the layout while asking staff to finalize colors and manage budget risks.
Eric Butler moved to approve Option A with the caveat that board members would take a second look at color choices; Bruce Hildreth seconded the motion and the board approved it by roll-call vote. Board members praised additions—most notably a merry-go-round and a larger pod spinner—while debating whether to expand swing capacity and how to preserve accessibility features in a small footprint.
Public works intern Charles Spurley told the board the project budget was set at $150,000 and that the current design is approximately $8,000 over that figure; he recommended in-house demolition and other cost savings (including option choices on engineered wood fiber surfacing) to keep the project within budget. Kate Cornelius said she was enthusiastic about the revisions: “I love it,” she said, while noting color choices would be revisited.
Board members asked staff to prioritize accessibility in future renovations elsewhere in Gladstone (for example at Patterson Park) because Nick Shannon is a smaller site with limited parking and no restroom. Staff will bring finalized colors and any contract adjustments back to council as required.
