Board hears draft Parent Expectations for Student Success; commissioners press for outreach and incentives

Dr. Richardson presented a draft Parent Expectations for Student Success document that district staff developed with principals, parent leaders and the Office of Parent and Family Engagement.

"The document being considered entitled Parent Expectations for Student Success was developed at the request of principals during one of my training sessions with them," Dr. Richardson said, explaining the draft is intended to fill a gap by outlining family responsibilities and expectations. Commissioners voiced broad support while probing how the district will give the guidance "teeth," what outreach methods will be used and whether students can play a role in encouraging parental engagement.

Commissioners recommended adopting multiple outreach channels beyond print, including social media, principal-led distribution at registration, and in-person listening sessions so parents can ask questions. Commissioner Divine asked about costs; staff answered no additional budget is anticipated at this stage and that printing is not required if a digital campaign is used. Several board members suggested involving students and student leaders to increase parent buy-in during rollout.

The item was presented for information; staff said they will collect board feedback and finalize the campaign approach ahead of the school year.
