The Fairmont City Council voted unanimously May 6 to adopt an ordinance rezoning multiple parcels in the Grant Annex District to neighborhood residential, a step planners said will allow several adjacent housing projects to proceed.
Shay Street, the city’s director of planning and development, told council the planning commission reviewed petitions BC 2509 and BC 2510 together and “unanimously sent this forward to you all with a favorable recommendation,” noting the proposal aligns with the adopted comprehensive plan. Keith Axton, representing the developers’ engineering team, urged council to approve the rezoning so his clients could move forward.
An attendee who said they had participated in planning hearings highlighted the St. James Gate project led by the Meanes family and called it “the potential to be the single largest housing development in the city's history,” urging council support. Councilmember McDaniel, council’s representative to the planning commission, echoed staff and commissioners, noting planning had public hearings and no opposition during its review.
The ordinance amends the zoning map for parcels listed in the Grant Annex District (parcels 12, 12.1, 14, 15, 48 and parcel 98.2 on Marion County tax maps) and was adopted by roll-call vote with recorded yes votes from Council members Wade, McDaniel, Moran, Rice, Newsome, Horton, Weber, Sole and Mayor Bolyard. The approval moves the rezoning into the city’s regulatory framework; next steps will follow any platting and permitting required for the developments.
