Historic commission approves Lindy Hill shed, temporary reclaimed steps and gate

The East Haddam Historic District Commission unanimously approved an application for a new shed and the temporary reuse of reclaimed wooden steps at 26066 Lindy Hill Road, with the applicant told he will receive a certificate of appropriateness at a later date. Chair opened the hearing and noted the commission had a quorum before taking public testimony and a presentation from the applicant, who represented himself.
Applicant Charles Demer said he salvaged old-growth steps from an earlier building and placed them temporarily to provide access, and that neighbors’ reactions were positive. "Everybody walked by said, well, they look like they've always been there," Demer told the commission. Commissioners asked for photos showing visibility from the main road and discussed hardware choices; Demer said he planned to use authentic strap hinges for the garden gate. A commissioner moved to accept the project, the motion was seconded, and Chair announced, "This passes unanimously." The commission also indicated that privacy fencing and the gate—though not included in the original filing—could be added to the application record and requested a photograph of the gate for documentation.
