Local fire companies report calls, recruit new members and seek federal grants

Leaders from two volunteer fire companies gave updates at the Southampton Township meeting June 16 on operations, recruitment and grant activity.
Scott Mitchell of Vincent Fire Company reported on recent calls and said the department is "working on completing federal grants" and will host a large water-supply drill over the weekend that will include multiple county departments and is open for public viewing. Michael Rathjen, chief of Hampton Lakes Fire Company, expressed condolences for a town accident that day, reported adding four new members last month, said the company is applying for a SAFER grant and listed upcoming fundraising events.
Administrator Brandon Umba told the meeting that the Township is not commenting on the accident and directed any inquiries to the New Jersey State Police. The volunteer companies said they are continuing recruitment and grant-seeking efforts to maintain staffing and equipment readiness.
