A Connecticut nonprofit called Superhero Training Corps asked the town to designate a portion of East Haddam's Nickel‑Per‑Nip (NIPS) allocation to support volunteer‑led cleanup programming and complimentary transfer‑station access for collected litter.
The group's letter, read into the record, described 17 cleanup events organized across nearby towns that mobilized 55 volunteers and removed more than 935 pounds of litter. The letter — signed by Tyler Thompson Severo, executive director — requested funds to cover supplies, safety equipment and outreach, and asked for complimentary municipal transfer‑station access for litter collected during SDC events. Town staff said the town receives about $10,000 annually in NIPS funds and recently used the money to join regional household hazardous‑waste events, costing roughly $5,800 this spring; the available remainder of the annual allocation was not specified. Staff recommended leaving the correspondence on file and offered to meet with the nonprofit to discuss possibilities.
The board did not allocate funds at the meeting; staff will follow up with the nonprofit to determine feasible support.
