Northwest Local formalizes threat-assessment team, plans ALICE training for staff

The board reviewed a new safety initiative in which the district will formalize a threat-assessment team and roll out ALICE training for staff.
The superintendent described a checklist-driven approach and said the team would include the lead administrator, school resource officer, mental-health professionals and teachers. "We're going to call that the threat assessment team," he said, adding the team will use common language to classify incidents as low, moderate or high risk so that out-of-office administrators can understand the situation quickly and join on-site as needed.
Staff said the checklist will include questions about motivation, specific targets, timelines, access to weapons, recent acute stressors, mental-health history and social supports. The goal, the superintendent said, is to intervene proactively "before behaviors or concerns escalate into any kind of eventual violence." Board members and staff indicated the plan will be discussed with principals and the safety committee ahead of the school year to prepare faculty on the district's first day.
No formal vote was required for the informational update; the board will receive follow-up on implementation details and training schedules.
