Theatre Nova's staging of Athena pairs choreographed fencing with a coming-of-age love story, the program's host said in an opening segment of FYI. The small, female-fronted cast performs at the Yellow Barn Fridays through Sundays through Aug. 9; tickets are available at theaternova.org.
A speaker who identifies as a stage combatant, stunt performer and actor described the play's tone and physical demands: "I like to say the stories that I like to work on and direct are violently tender and fairly feminine," the stage combatant said, adding that the cast's fight training helps the production take its adolescent characters seriously. The segment noted that the protagonist trains toward competing in the Junior Olympics by the end of the play and that the show foregrounds messy, realistic teenage relationships.
Theater organizers and performers emphasized the show's focus on young women's agency and athleticism. The FYI host encouraged viewers to see the production at the Yellow Barn and to visit the production web page for tickets.
