Chief Johnson said the agreement includes updated language for jurisdictional coverage after an upcoming sheriff transition and clarifies FERPA-related access so the officer can assist with safety-related school information while preserving student privacy. He emphasized the city will not use law-enforcement authority for routine school discipline, saying officers can assist only when there is a safety concern.
Council moved to approve the agreement and authorized the mayor's signature; the motion passed on a voice vote. Chief Johnson said the SRO assignment has been successful and the district has committed to continuing support for the position, though the arrangement depends on a separate jurisdictional memorandum with the sheriff's office.
