Union County recognizes student winners in America 250 art contest

Union County commissioners honored student winners of the county's America 250 art contest during their July 20 meeting. Liz Cooper, the county's public communications director, said the contest drew 50 original submissions from more than 15 schools and homeschooled families and that community members cast 1,177 votes to select eight people's-choice winners.
"This contest has been a wonderful way to celebrate creativity, encourage civic pride, and engage our youngest residents as we commemorate America's 250th anniversary," Cooper said. Margaret James, executive director of the Union County Community Arts Council, introduced the students and praised their creativity, calling Union County "a unique place with unique people."
The board and staff said the winning artwork will be on display in the Government Center lobby through the end of August. Winners named by the presenters included Zoe Opalak Opo, Riley Uten, Amelia Smith, Hannah Guitard, Pier Gapati, Para Bala Belaloo, Nathaniel Porch (represented in the display), and one student identified as "Kota." The county said photos of each student and their artwork will be posted on the county's website.
