Nelson County schools seek new buses as 21 vehicles exceed recommended age

"There are 21 buses in the fleet which exceed the recommended age, and three are out of service awaiting repairs," Superintendent Dr. Amanda Hester said, adding the budget request includes four buses estimated at $150,000 each.
Assistant Superintendent Shannon Irvin confirmed buses are paid for upon delivery and that lead times from order to delivery have been about a year. Board members discussed placing bus purchases in the operating budget rather than waiting for available county capital funds in order to maintain fleet reliability and comply with state specifications.
