Commission directs phased funding and enforcement to restore town balustrades

Mayor Fiers read the town code limiting plantings—"only ground cover may be planted in front of them, and shrubbery behind them is limited to the height of the balustrade"—and said the balustrades are a town staple. He suggested painting and replacing those in poor condition at an estimated cost of approximately $2,000 each and directed that funds be placed in the upcoming budget in phases. The commission also directed staff to send letters notifying residents of violations and that the town would correct the violation if the owner did not do so by the specified deadline.
Resident Lenny Rintel, 140 Bravado Lane, said he has maintained his balustrade for six years and asked whether the town would water and maintain the areas after correction; he suggested approaching noncompliant residents before taking enforcement action.
