Board raises oversight concerns for supplemental instructional materials and access during reconsideration

A board member asked staff to close an oversight loophole that could allow supplemental materials selected by teachers or principals to escape the same review rigor applied to core instructional materials. The member proposed language that would require "any supplemental material that is used as a primary instructional source for a unit of study ... shall be subject to the same standards of review, transparency, and board oversight as core instructional materials."
Participants also reviewed how access to challenged materials should be handled during reconsideration. Staff noted state law typically allows continued access while a reconsideration is underway, but the board discussed offering alternative assignments for students whose parents request them. The district staff said they would follow statutory guidance and consult the district parliamentarian on details.
Board members asked staff to add clearer language to ARs about supplemental materials and to ensure the reconsideration process preserves access while providing alternatives when parents request them.
