District staff brief board on counselors’ roles, USBE review and time allocation

The Salt Lake County School Board held a study session focused on the roles and responsibilities of school counselors. Mindy Holmdale introduced the session and Stacy Lindsey, the district’s secondary school counseling specialist, described the state (USBE) school counseling review process and the seven standards used to evaluate programs. "They can either rate you approaching standard ... or they can rate you meet standard and all our programs met standards and pass the review," Lindsey said.
Presenters displayed time-allocation charts showing how counselor duties shift from prevention and collaborative classroom instruction at the elementary level toward an increasing emphasis on college-and-career-readiness (CCR) at high school. Holmdale told the board the district draws those allocations from guidance by the American School Counselor Association and the state but adapts them to local needs. She said schools can justify adjustments to the pie-chart allocations based on site-level assessments and needs.
