Board told Home Rule Charter cannot revive pre-cutoff business privilege tax

Staff and counsel reviewed a proposed Home Rule Charter and said West Norriton cannot adopt a traditional business privilege or mercantile tax because the Township did not have such a tax in place before the state statutory cutoff. Jason M. Bobst explained the limitation and said there may be movement on the issue in the future, but not at this time.
Commissioner Miller said he was disappointed in that outcome and added, "we were elected to do things and now we can't." Ms. Milazzo suggested lobbying in Harrisburg, and Mr. Bobst noted that the Pennsylvania Municipal League will meet the first week of October in Hershey as a potential venue for advocacy.
