Council seeks ADA-friendly, art-ready bus-stop shelters; directs staff to prioritize high-ridership locations

Public Works presented three options for covered benches or shelters for Roeland Park’s bus stops: NobleWins (benches made from recycled wind turbine blades, including art styles and Arcadia models), Barco Products (translucent lexan shelters with add-on benches), and Handy Hut (cantilever wood-style shelters with integrated benches). Staff provided rough pricing for 6–8 units, lead-time estimates, and warranty notes; NobleWins’ pricing and a potential volume discount were noted for orders placed before May 31.
Council members praised the aesthetics of the NobleWins recycled-blade benches but raised concerns about accessibility for people who use wheelchairs and for parents with strollers. Council member Hague emphasized ADA access and asked that staff "focus on the red and yellow dots" (higher ridership stops) and prioritize shelters in business districts and by Sunflower Medical. The council asked staff to pursue shelter options that are ADA-friendly and can be wrapped or otherwise customized with art, and to return to council with warranty information, updated cost estimates, and prioritized locations. The mayor and council also endorsed including waste receptacles at selected stops.
