Commission approves $28.3M arena change orders and readies $350M bond sale

Mayor told commissioners these are initial orders to get the project started and to allow the county to lock in steel prices amid market volatility. "Some of this money is using to go ahead and purchase the steel," the mayor said, noting the need to secure pricing in the current market. The mayor also stated, "We're not gonna be over budget," and said the county's bond authorization for the project—approved at $350,000,000—would be taken to market soon to finance remaining work.
The commission moved and approved the change orders and the mayor said additional items related to the arena will return to the commission as required. Staff committed to regular updates and to alert the commission if any overruns emerge; the mayor said he expects six-month updates on spending and project status as work proceeds.
