Planning director outlines countywide comprehensive plan update and community outreach

Gregory A. Brown, planning director with the Macon-Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commission, presented the county's comprehensive-plan update on July 21, saying the exercise will guide growth "over the next 20 to 30 years" while concentrating on priorities for the next five years.
"Where are we now? Where do we want to go? And how do we get there?" Brown asked, outlining the outreach and technical steps taken so far. He summarized the process since September 2025, including a kickoff meeting, the Nov. 10 public meeting, an opening-night community meeting in January, and a community survey that closed April 2 with about 153 responses.
Brown told commissioners the planning team has held seven steering-committee meetings involving roughly 40–50 participants representing citizens, elected and appointed officials, neighborhood organizations, local-government staff and business owners. He said element development (transportation, economic development/quality of life, housing) will continue through October 2026 and that the county will consult the recently completed 2050 housing assessment by RKG and Associates to inform the housing element.
The presentation emphasized community outreach formats—nine district-focused land-use meetings planned for Aug. 24 through Oct. 30 and flexible "meeting-in-a-box" options to help residents participate on their own schedules. Brown asked commissioners for help scheduling meeting locations in each commission district and directed residents to the project website (makingithappenplan.com) for dates and contact information.
Next steps: staff will hold the nine district meetings, continue element development through October 2026, and return to the commission with findings and recommended plan language and maps as the process proceeds.
