Eastlake student presents low-cost air monitors to Sammamish council

A student from Eastlake High School presented a low-cost air-quality monitoring system and asked the city to consider deploying additional monitors across Sammamish to provide neighborhood-level air-quality data during wildfire smoke events.
"I designed a low cost monitoring system that continuously measures particulate matter including PM 2.5 and PM 10," the student said, explaining the system could be deployed in multiple locations, provide near-real-time community-level data, and be compared with state and federal telemetry using machine learning to improve local insights. The student thanked local partners who provided guidance, including the Sammamish Chamber of Commerce and Puget Sound Clean Air Agency.
Council thanked the student for the work and staff said they would consider how community-deployed monitors could complement existing regional monitoring networks.
What’s next: Staff will follow up on opportunities to pilot community monitoring and discuss coordination with regional air-quality agencies.
