County warned of $200K–$300K SNAP/Medicaid administrative shift and doubled Medicaid workload

Becker County Human Services told the board it is preparing for an expected unfunded shift in administrative costs for SNAP and changes to Medicaid renewals that will increase local workload.
"The current estimate to the County for the... shift in administration costs for the SNAP program is about 25%, which is expected to be between 200 and 300,000 for Becker County alone," the human services representative told the board. The chair and commissioners noted the county will need to absorb those costs, and the shift is likely to appear in upcoming levies or budgets.
Staff also warned of procedural changes to Medicaid that will double case touches: renewals will move from annual to every six months beginning Jan. 1, 2027, and new work requirements will generate system tasks requiring additional staff time. County officials said no additional state or federal funding has been identified to cover the expanded administration.
Next steps: Human Services will continue to quantify costs and present budget options; the board indicated the change will affect the 2027 levy and asked staff to search for internal savings and efficiencies.
