Road superintendent reports storm damage; county eyes culvert and bridge repairs

Road and Bridge Superintendent Wayne Lanning told the Rawlins County Board of Commissioners that severe weather on June 20, 2026 caused significant damage in the Achilles area and elsewhere. Lanning said he is working with Penco Engineering to develop repair options and will obtain estimates for culverts and bridges; he told the board the county has roughly $600,000 available in the bridge fund to address repairs.
Lanning also advised the board that a county grader is out of service pending transmission repairs and that Big Iron equipment had arrived to assist. He said he hired a part-time high-school employee to help with post-storm work. Lanning reported an AT&T phone line was cut during the storm and that AT&T billed $2,500; he said he is following up with AT&T. Lanning further noted resident Kyle Grafel asked to close a road by his house and make it private; Lanning will consult County Attorney Christopher A. Rohr on the legal process for road closure.
