Commissioners consider making property tax discount perpetual
Summary
At a DeKalb County workshop commissioners reviewed a draft resolution to make a 2% early-payment property tax discount perpetual and discussed whether taxpayers must still apply annually. The chair said the change would avoid repeated votes but staff noted the application process likely remains yearly.

The chair said the county plans to present a resolution to acknowledge an existing tax freeze and to make the county's property tax discount perpetual. "To receive a 2% discount, you pay between October 1st and 31st of each year and then a 1% in November 1 through November 30 of each year," the chair said, describing the payment windows that the proposed language would preserve.
Commissioners were told the 2023 tax freeze remains in effect and that continuing the discount will require another resolution unless the new draft is adopted to make it ongoing. The chair told colleagues he had "rewritten it to be more perpetual so it won't you won't ever have to come back unless you wanna repair it." Commissioners also clarified that, even if the discount is made perpetual, taxpayers would likely still need to apply each year so officials can verify continued eligibility for any relief.
The discussion referenced the trustee's office (the chair said he had "talked to our trustee, Sean Driver") as the place to check operational questions such as annual application forms. The chair recommended commissioners review the draft and prepare any questions before the county brings a formal vote to the full commission.
