The Lowell Sustainability Council set a tentative date of Oct. 24 for its next sustainability summit and discussed venue, format and outreach at its most recent meeting. The group agreed on a three‑hour program (roughly 11 a.m.–2 p.m.), proposals for awards and a heavy emphasis on hands‑on brainstorming that leads to short‑term action.
Chair (S3) said the group had "30 minutes at least" for summit planning during the meeting and urged members to pick a date so staff and partners could confirm logistics. Committee member (S2) offered a UMass Lowell campus space (the Institute of Sustainability/Weston Sampson office area) as a likely venue and said the space could accommodate different setups; S2 noted an atrium could fit up to about 200 people shoulder‑to‑shoulder while a practical turnout for past events has been closer to 60. Members agreed to aim for a format that mixes a keynote, a short panel and facilitated brainstorming tables.
Organizers discussed program features to increase follow‑through: issuing a call for nominations for awards (green design, community leadership), asking attendees to pick one near‑term action and reporting back at the following summit, and recruiting students through university partners. "We can kind of come back with our ideas for the August meeting," S2 said, urging incremental planning at the council's remaining meetings before October. The council also decided to form a summit subcommittee to handle awards, food and communications and to forward promotional copy to the city's communications team for approval and posting.
Next steps identified by members include confirming the venue availability, circulating nomination copy for the city's channels, setting up a summit subcommittee and holding at least one subcommittee meeting before the full event to finalize logistics.
