Rangely supervisor says town website is nearly compliant with state accessibility rules

Supervisor Jeanie told the council during the Jan. 28 meeting that she has spent about a year working with the state's site-improvement resources to make the town website accessible to users with screen readers and other assistive technology. She said the town runs PDFs through CommonLook and is adding alt text and header structure so a screen reader can present content correctly, and reported the site is nearing full compliance: "I think it was 99.7 or 9%, meeting their goals," she said.

Jeanie outlined practical steps for ongoing compliance: an accessibility statement at the bottom of every page, an email contact for accessibility requests with a three- to five-day response target, and a simple plan to document how the town will respond to complaints. Councilmembers asked about the time commitment; Jeanie said the work is incremental and that she typically spends an hour here or there to keep the site current. The supervisor also noted Word and state tools can flag problems and that the town will correct issues promptly when notified.
