Councilman Aaron Sims described a new pilot called 'Project Irondale Swims' intended to provide swim instruction, water-safety education and emergency-rescue infrastructure to Irondale residents. Sims said the program grew out of recent drowning-related incidents in nearby waterways and aims to make swim instruction broadly available to residents of all ages and incomes.
Sims summarized the program's mission: "every citizen in Irondale should know how to swim." Several council members pledged $1,000 each in discretionary funds to seed the effort; organizers noted there is no municipal pool in Irondale but listed nearby facilities (Lakeshore, The Wise, JCC) and potential partnerships. The council left the funding on consent and members asked staff to help identify instructors, locations and volunteer support for a launch in summer 2027 if logistics permit.
