Holmdel introduces 7th-grade digital citizenship elective to teach students online responsibility

Shantel Simonelli described the class as part of the district's response to the ways technology is affecting students' attention and emotional regulation. "This year, we just introduced a new elective for our incoming 7th graders ... called digital citizenship and technology in society," she said, explaining the course is interactive and aims to equip students with awareness and responsible habits before high school.
Panelists framed the elective as part of a broader strategy that includes recess restoration and other efforts to build students' self-regulation. Administrators said the course seeks to prepare students to balance productive uses of technology (collaboration and learning) with limits on passive scrolling and harmful online interactions.
The panel did not provide the elective's specific syllabus or assessment measures; staff said the course is being delivered this school year to incoming 7th graders.
