Teachers and Lane ESD present Communities of Practice pilot showing improved staff collaboration

Teachers leading the district’s Communities of Practice (COP) presented results of their first-year pilot to the board. Faiza Sarang, who led the project locally, described six COP cohorts (elementary, middle and high school offerings) and facilitator planning meetings; Kate Klein of the Western Regional Educator Network (WREN) said REN provided technical assistance, data collection and a small grant to compensate facilitators and the COP lead. “This project elevates teacher leadership and provides professional learning that reflects the unique needs of this district,” Klein said.
Presenters cited session feedback and pre/post surveys showing stronger teacher belonging and increased inclusivity, including more participation by classified staff and better collaboration in special education settings. The pilot includes a final session on May 22 and a post-survey phase; REN plans interviews with facilitators to synthesize findings for next year’s design. Board members praised the work and accepted a plan to present COP results at a June administrative leadership conference.
Next steps: compile and publish synthesized feedback, continue REN-supported facilitation next year and file a summary report of findings for the board.
