Genesee County rolls out sensory-friendly clinic pilot and mobile health unit plans

Health department staff outlined a sensory-friendly clinic pilot and how they plan to deploy the Compass mobile health unit to reach high-need areas of Genesee County. Estelle said staff used internal mini-grants to fund pilot features for immunization and WIC clinics and trained staff in communication and accommodations for neurodivergent clients. "It was actually their idea chosen"—she credited Leah Johnson and Joanne Herman for leading the effort.
Leah and the team described operational requirements for the 38-foot mobile unit: a primary-service focus per visit, site clearances (sufficient space, clearance of low telephone lines), a prefilled request form that auto-generates calendar invites, and use of social vulnerability index data to prioritize visits to 11 high-vulnerability ZIP codes in the county. Staff said they will provide partner-facing presentations to commissioners and asked commissioners to refer sites and partners for early visits. A driver hire was recently offered to support the unit.
Commissioners asked how to request visits and staff said a partner request form and a point of contact (Brad/Leah) will manage scheduling; staff committed to share the partner presentation and to meet with municipalities about permitting and site preparedness before deployment.
