Planning Commission adopts water/sewer priority map and sets public hearing on draft allocation

The Mount Airy Planning Commission voted Feb. 23, 2026 to accept the Town—s Priority Area Map under Chapter 109 (Water) for the 2026-2027 allocation period. The motion to accept the priority map was made by Commissioner Steve O—Malley and seconded by Martina Hatley; the vote was unanimous.
The Commission also introduced draft water allocation categories (Chapter 109, Section 109-19.4 B,C) and set a public hearing on the draft for the next Planning Commission meeting on March 30, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. The Commission will forward its recommendation on allocation categories to the Town Council for the Council—s April 6 meeting. Commissioners emphasized the need for a public hearing before forwarding the recommendation, allowing public input on priorities for limited water and sewer capacity.
The item arose alongside a review of county water resources material: staff noted a complete draft of the County Water Resources Element was sent to the State for review on Nov. 12. The Planning Commission—s actions on the priority map and schedule set the procedural steps for Council consideration and public involvement.
