Tree board and cemetery teams outline plantings and multi-year headstone restoration plan

The tree board and cemetery representatives briefed the council on coordinated maintenance, plantings and a concerted headstone-restoration effort.
The tree board said its community tree grant funded soil improvements and scheduled plantings of two columnar sweet gums and four Natchez crape myrtles on Brook Street; workers will relocate larger trees on Independence Street and noted watering requirements if rainfall is insufficient. "Should there be insufficient rainfall, these trees will need to be watered as often as twice a week until they lose their leaves in the fall," the tree board said.
Cemetery representatives described an advanced headstone restoration training at Greenway and a basics restoration class following the workshop; organizers expect about 28 signed-up participants and described the initiative as a 3–5 year project given the number of headstones that need cleaning, resetting and repair.
