Rutherford County highlights summer CTE internships and mobile learning labs

Tiffany (district staff) described a third-year industry- and district-led summer internship program that placed students with partners such as TW Frierson, which paid participating students $20 per hour at commercial construction sites under a work-based learning course aligned with TCA 50-5-107 vocational exemptions.
The district reported two streams of internships: company-hosted positions (construction placements at TW Frierson) and central-office / summer-learning camp placements (paid via Workforce Essentials under WIOA). Staff noted recruiting begins early each year and funding timing compresses the process; some interns earned industry certifications such as FAA Part 107 for drone operation.
Brandon Stewart, mobile learning lab specialist, described the mobile CTE trailers and showed a short clip of student-produced recruitment videos. "Career exploration isn't about having all the answers; it's about discovering possibilities," Stewart said, adding the program has drawn state and national attention and will be used for recruitment and teacher outreach.
The board recognized participating students and teachers; staff emphasized continued dependence on federal WIOA funds and industry partnerships to sustain paid internships.
