Montrose council approves fire‑station roof and painting projects, authorizes conference attendance

The City of Montrose City Council voted to award a roof replacement for the city’s fire station to Kingdom Builders of Howard Lake with a not‑to‑exceed price of $130,000 and approved an interior and exterior painting contract estimated at about $30,000.
Kevin, the fire department representative, told the council the station’s roof is roughly 30 years old and that attempts to patch leaks over the past five to seven years had become increasingly costly. "The roof is now 30 years old... award the project to Kingdom Builders out of Howard Lake with a not to exceed cost of $130,000," Kevin said during his presentation. The council approved Resolution 2026‑25 for the roof replacement by voice vote, recorded as 5–0.
Kevin also presented bids for painting work and recommended Fresh Paint (St. Paul) for the station interior and exterior at about $30,000. The council approved Resolution 2026‑26 to proceed and authorized Kevin and Jackie to sign documents to begin the work.
Earlier in the fire department report, Kevin asked for authorization for five officers to attend the Minnesota Fire Chiefs Conference in Duluth (Oct. 14–17, 2026). He said hotel costs were higher than budgeted — "the estimated cost for the rooms is between $350 and $400 per night, for 5 rooms" — and the council approved a motion to allow overspending of the travel expense budget and to cover the overage with other line items; that motion passed 5–0.
