County hears that group health premiums are rising; officials to weigh plan changes or higher contributions

Knapp Miller Brown representative Zach Richardson told the Washington County Council and commissioners that the county’s 2025–2026 group health insurance renewals show increased premiums and that leaders will need to consider plan design changes or higher employee contributions to keep coverage affordable.
"The premiums are raising," Richardson said, explaining that the county could either change plan options or increase employee contributions. Council members and county commissioners were asked to work together to evaluate affordability and sustainability across coverage options before decisions are made.
Officials did not take a vote on benefits changes at the meeting. The presentation prompted a request that county leadership and the commissioners review comparisons of plan options and a fiscal analysis of potential employee cost-sharing changes ahead of future budget decisions.
