Council approves routine renewals and applies for public-safety grants including body cameras

At its meeting the Rangely Town Council approved a set of routine financial and license matters and authorized several grant applications intended to support public safety.
The council approved the February 2025 check register and approved a liquor license renewal for Powell Liquor Company by voice vote. Council also authorized an application to the Department of Justice’s JAG program for the full purchase of two fully equipped Chevy Tahoes, quoted in the packet at $191,590, and approved a separate JAG application for 16 body-worn cameras with location-tracking capability, estimated at $33,216.
Council members asked whether location trackers would trigger recurring annual costs. A staff member clarified that the initial purchase would include equipment and that tracker use would be discretionary: if the trackers are used, the department will include any ongoing subscription costs in its annual budget. “If the location trackers don’t work in our area because of lack of service, they are not going to use them,” a staff speaker said, adding that costs would be budgeted only if the feature is adopted.
All of the above motions were approved; the grant authorizations are for application only and do not guarantee award. Council did not authorize purchases until grant awards and budget appropriations are confirmed.
