The board approved two downtown outdoor-dining requests on July 21: a sidewalk/patio expansion for Blockhead at 1100 Lincoln Way and a request from Smutsers Tavern for two curbside tables near 608 Monroe Street.
City planning staff reviewed the Blockhead site plan and reminded the board that city design standards require a five-foot minimum from the back of curb to maintain a pedestrian walkway; staff and the owners confirmed that egress and fire access had been discussed with the fire department. The Blockhead owner said the patio will include planters and chained openings for safety, and that the upstairs event space is planned for a later phase. “We worked with DOT and the city and got that all taken care of,” the owner said regarding delivery windows.
On Smutsers Tavern, staff confirmed the ordinance requirement of a minimum four-foot pedestrian walkway and that proposed umbrellas and awnings meet clearance standards; the board approved the request. Members said the outdoor seating will help enliven downtown and thanked the owners for investment.
