City to close Boyd Boulevard at State Road 2 for 45-day stormwater project starting July 27

The Board of Public Works and Safety on July 21 approved a plan to fully close the stretch of Boyd Boulevard at State Road 2 in front of Walmart beginning Monday, July 27 for about 45 days to build substantial stormwater improvements.
Craig Phillips, a city department head, told the board the project is intended to “make way for some substantial stormwater improvements on the East Side of town that would allow for the expansion of some of our businesses in that area, as well as additional possible employment and economic development.” He said the closure will not extend farther south than Jefferson Street and that local access will be preserved from the south side of the site.
Phillips said there will be road-closure signs but no state-mandated detour because the work is a local project; he urged drivers to use Monroe Street as the official local detour and said the city’s communications director has posted notices on social media. “Local traffic will be able to turn on Jefferson, or Ohio or go east on Division,” he said, noting alternate local routes for residents and visitors.
Board members asked for specifics about business access. Phillips clarified later in the meeting that Walmart’s drive entrances off Boyd Boulevard will be open from the south during the closure and that signage and adjustments have been made to accommodate customer access. “You will be able to get to Walmart from the South,” he said, apologizing for an earlier misstatement and confirming the city’s plan to maintain access while construction proceeds.
The board did not vote separately on the closure beyond accepting the department update and clarifying the access plan; residents are advised to check the city’s social channels for detour and parking information.
