Montrose council adopts citywide artificial intelligence policy

The Montrose City Council voted 5-0 to adopt an artificial intelligence policy that staff included in the council packet and which, according to staff, applies to employees and elected officials. The policy was reviewed by the city attorney and reflects discussions at recent clerk and institute conferences.
A councilmember who worked on a similar policy in a larger city praised the draft and supported adoption. City staff told the council the policy clarifies where and how AI tools should be used and that elected officials would be subject to the same guidelines as employees. "It was reviewed by the attorney," staff said during the presentation. The council moved to adopt the policy and unanimously approved it.
The policy will be implemented by administrative staff and applies immediately to city employees and councilmembers; staff will provide guidance on acceptable AI tools and recordkeeping requirements.
