Spencer County Fiscal Court voted July 6 to raise pay for paramedic staff and approve new part-time coverage to handle training and education demands.
By motion of Esq. Stump, seconded by Esq. Cotton, the court ordered full-time paramedics’ pay increased to $22 per hour and part-time paramedics to $25 per hour. The motion was recorded as approved by the court (motion recorded in meeting minutes). EMS Director R. Klinglesmith had presented a proposed pay schedule intended to improve recruitment and retention and showed a matrix of current vs. proposed rates for EMTs, EMT-Advanced and paramedics.
The court also approved rehiring retired employee James Vandenbos in a part-time capacity (about 24 hours per week) to cover training, CPR classes and the county high-school EMT program. Klinglesmith told the court that bringing Vandenbos back on a set part-time schedule would meet educator needs without incurring overtime costs. "I would like approval to take EMS Employees to the proposed rates and implement the proposed Pay Scale," the packet quotes Klinglesmith as saying when introducing the proposal.
Separately, the court voted to increase pay for Conner Brumleve after Brumleve obtained AEMT certification; the court raised his rate from $20.62 to $21.00 per hour (motion by Esq. Eldridge, second by Judge Scott Travis).
What happens next: the court’s motions set the new pay rates and approved the part-time rehire; the pay changes will be implemented by payroll/HR and are reflected in meeting action records.
