A council member moved, pursuant to a favorable 8-24 referral from the planning and zoning commission, to authorize purchase of 6.49 acres of state-owned property (as shown on the assessor's map) for $350,000 with funding from general fund surplus and to authorize the sale of the same 6.49 acres to the owner of SportsCenter of Connecticut or an entity to be determined for $565,000, reimbursing the general fund surplus. The motion also authorized corporate counsel to execute necessary documents. The motion was seconded; after a short discussion noting the property's long history and development context the motion carried by voice vote.
Council members described the parcel as a narrow strip adjacent to a landfill and existing business operations, and said the sale would place the parcel with an owner able to make productive use of it. The council characterized the action as advancing a master-plan vision for development along the Housatonic River.
