Rep. Rob Bieswanger asks committee to allow state pilot studying psychedelics for PTSD

Representative Rob Bieswanger presented RS 33,592 C1 to the House Health and Welfare Committee, asking the panel to permit a state pilot program to study several psychedelic substances as potential therapies for post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.
"What we're offering in the bill here is to have a state pilot program which will allow for the study of of certain psychedelic substances," Bieswanger said, naming ibogaine, MDMA and psilocybin. He said the proposal would not seek state funding in the current budget cycle and that he expects a state university could host the research.
Bieswanger cited federal and out-of-state research efforts, saying the Department of Defense has contributed funding to related studies and that Texas invested in ibogaine research; he also referenced a documentary and claimed that a cited study showed large post-treatment reductions in PTSD diagnoses among a small group of treated veterans. He told the committee he is not asking for money at this time and requested a full hearing.
The committee moved to introduce RS 33,592 C1 and the motion carried by voice vote. The matter was introduced for the committee's future consideration.
