Council adopts Chapter 17 building-code updates to align with SB 418; changes effective Jan. 1, 2027

The City Council adopted updates to Chapter 17 of the Bel Aire municipal code to synchronize local building-code cycles with the Mid-America Board of Code Directors (MABCD) and new state requirements under Senate Bill 418.
Paula Downs, director of community development, summarized the staff report and said the changes "do require us to utilize the 2018 edition of the international residential code." Staff recommended the ordinance take effect January 1, 2027, so projects already underway may finish under the code in effect when they were permitted. Councilmember Greg David moved to adopt the ordinance and the council approved it by roll call, 5–0.
Staff said some chapters already reflect older cycles and that adopting the newer cycles aligns Bel Aire with regional practice and MABCD review. The update is intended to set standards for health, safety and public welfare and to streamline future building permit review.
