Board member urges review of board conduct policies after self-appraisal

Board member Dr. Joy told colleagues that the recent board self-appraisal raised concerns about how information and decisions are shared among members and moved that the board reexamine policies related to board member behavior and roles. "I'm making a motion that we reexamine the portion of the board policies that has to do with the behaviors of board members," she said on the record.
Dr. Joy said she was prompted by an incident in which she learned of a payment-related issue only after she had voted and that, had she known earlier, she might have voted differently. Other members suggested discussing the appraisal and any policy changes at the customary pre-school-year retreat so the board could develop specific recommendations before proposing policy language. Dr. Joy agreed to wait until after the retreat to bring any formal policy-change motion back to the board.
