Board hears airport growth case as staff cites FDOT grant and revenue gains

The board spent substantial time discussing airports and their role in county economic development. Staff told commissioners combined airport revenues had risen from about $35,000 (circa 2002) to more than $450,000 in the prior year, and noted ongoing lease and corporate hangar projects.
One commissioner described a Florida Department of Transportation Aviation Division grant to extend the Crystal River runway to 5,000 feet and argued that a longer runway attracts charter companies and corporate traffic that spend locally. "Charter companies... bring people that own businesses that are thinking about moving here," a commissioner said. Other commissioners stressed the need to treat airports as enterprises and to ensure costs are captured appropriately in enterprise funds rather than the General Fund.
No new airport-specific appropriations were adopted at the hearing, but commissioners asked staff to continue pursuing enterprise fund strategies and to return with options that isolate airport operating costs from general taxpayer subsidies.
