The Atchison City Commission authorized the purchase of a 2026 Freightliner rear-load solid waste collection truck with a New Way packer from Elliott Equipment for $210,750. City staff said the purchase is part of the equipment replacement plan and that the truck will replace older units and become a primary vehicle while the outgoing unit would be used as a backup or auctioned.
Clinton McNamee told the commission the truck was recommended because it matches the chassis used in much of the existing fleet and that Elliott had units available with a lead time under 30 days. He said the item is budgeted in the equipment replacement plan (budget $235,000). A motion to authorize the order was made, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Commissioners asked about fleet counts and replacement cycles; staff explained the city keeps two rear loaders in regular service and maintains side-loaders and backups to cover holidays and outages.
