The Atchison City Commission adopted Ordinance 67-28 to rezone land at 1410 North 1st Street from R-1 (single-family residential) to Planned Development (PD) to allow Benedictine College to convert the residence into office space. City staff said the Planning Commission held a public hearing earlier in the month, provided notice to nearby owners and voted 5–0 in favor with a condition barring additional street, front-yard or side-yard parking.
Clinton McNamee described the location as at the corner of 1st and Harper, west of the baseball field, and said Benedictine representatives agreed that employees and visitors would use on-site parking or campus parking only. Staff noted the commission would need four votes to override the Planning Commission recommendation; commissioners considered the record and moved to adopt the ordinance. The motion was seconded and the mayor called for the vote; the ordinance passed by voice vote.
The rezoning updates the city's zoning map to reflect PD status for the parcel and includes the Planning Commission's parking restriction as a condition of approval.
