Commission designates HD Lee Flower Mills sign historic, with engineering conditions

Planning manager Dustin Michaelson described an application to re-install and restore the large rooftop HD Lee Flower Mills sign at 343 N. Santa Fe after refurbishment. The sign historically had three rows of lettering; the restored proposal calls for two rows (HD Lee above Flower Mills Company), two separate support structures (north and south lower headhouses) oriented for visibility along Santa Fe, and marquee-style bulb illumination. The Heritage Commission found the sign met the three-code criteria and recommended designation 4–0 with two conditions: submission of licensed-engineer-stamped structural plans prior to installation and maintenance consistent with the historic composition and lettering.
The commission concurred with Heritage Commission findings and adopted ordinance 26-11286 subject to the two conditions; the ordinance waives certain sign ordinance limits so long as safety, structural integrity, and historic features are preserved and any future alteration requires Heritage Commission review.
