Committee backs study commission to review public university governance

The committee chair told members that bill 2208 would create a governance study commission to review system-level governance of Mississippi's public institutions of higher learning. "It establishes a study committee that's tasked with reviewing the system level governance structure of Mississippi's public institutions of higher learning," the chair said.
The chair said the commission would examine accountability, oversight and coordination across institutions and would report "no later than December 1," with the commission dissolving Jan. 1. Senator Cindy Norwood asked which states would be studied for comparison; the chair said the commission would look broadly across the country and specifically cited Florida and Tennessee as examples of different systems to review. Committee members then voted the bill title sufficient to pass the committee sub.
