Senator says bill would let Capitol Police help enforce Jackson noise ordinances near late‑night alcohol sellers

Senators advanced a committee substitute to a bill that would give the Capitol Police additional authority within the city of Jackson to enforce municipal noise ordinances for certain businesses.
Senator Blunt said the measure narrows existing Capitol Police jurisdiction to add one responsibility: enforcing municipal noise ordinances for businesses permitted to sell alcohol in Jackson. "The bill would add to their jurisdiction ... the ability of ... enforcing noise ordinance as promulgated by the municipality for a business permitted under and what that means is they can sell alcohol," he said. He told the committee he had discussed the matter with Commissioner Tindall, who does not object.
The sponsor said the change does not remove jurisdiction from municipal police or the sheriff's department; it simply adds an enforcement tool. The committee moved the committee substitute (title sufficient to pass) and recorded the ayes.
